Ever wonder what it takes to become a police officer or how authorities investigate a crime?
These topics and many more are covered during a ten-week Citizens' Academy Program offered to residents annually to gain a greater understanding of their Police Department. Citizens can learn more about the issues that affect law enforcement efforts in Oceanside and how to develop a partnership with the Police Department.
The goal of the program is to create a better understanding and stronger partnership between citizens and police through education. Participants are offered classroom instruction, as well as demonstrations by police K9s, the Oceanside Harbor Police, and other law enforcement-related workgroups.
The topics covered are:
- an overview of criminal law
- jurisdictional issues and responsibilities of criminal justice agencies
- use of firearms
- procedures used by Oceanside's patrol officers
- an introduction to the influence gangs and drugs have on the Oceanside community
- an introduction to emergency services communications
