Overview

The Oceanside Police Department (OPD) is committed to building trust, keeping our communities safe, and complying with state laws. This page explains how the Department handles situations involving immigration, the laws that guide our officers, and how OPD communicates about these matters.

OPD does not enforce federal immigration law.

Legal Guidelines

California Senate Bill 54 prohibits OPD officers from investigating, detaining or arresting people solely based on their immigration status.
OPD officers do not ask about immigration status, do not participate in immigration enforcement task forces, and do not assist with immigration arrests.

Calls for Emergency Assistance

OPD officers have an obligation to provide emergency assistance to members of the public and all law enforcement agencies, including those conducting immigration enforcement operations.

This document outlines OPD’s procedures when responding to calls for emergency services.

You can also access a Spanish version of that document by clicking here.

Public Communication

OPD takes pride in communicating transparently and efficiently regarding crime and safety issues in our city.

When OPD receives a call for emergency assistance that is related to immigration enforcement, we will provide an official statement to the community:

If an individual has been arrested for a criminal offense — including criminal immigration violations — they are generally held under the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service or the Bureau of Prisons. These individuals can be located via the following link: Federal Inmate Locator.
