Introducing Oceanside PD's Newest Team Member
With a wagging tail, Trent joined the Oceanside Police Department as the first Facility Dog in December 2024. This lovable Labrador/Golden Retriever mix brings a unique set of skills to the Police Department, helping us better serve the community and support our staff.
Born on November 9, 2022, Trent may be young, but he's already making a big impact. When he's not hard at work, you can find him enjoying his favorite squeaky balls, playing fetch, or taking well-deserved naps between his duties.
What is a Facility Dog?
As a professionally trained Facility Dog, Trent is more than just a friendly face. He serves multiple vital roles within our Department:
- Trent provides comfort to community members during sensitive interviews or difficult conversations with law enforcement
- Offers emotional support to children while their parents or guardians discuss important matters with Officers
- Helps reduce stress and promote well-being among Department staff
- Represents the Department at community events, including Coffee with Cop, school assemblies, and neighborhood gatherings
Professional Training for a Special Purpose
Trent isn't just any friendly dog – he's a graduate of Canine Companions, a prestigious non-profit organization specializing in training service dogs. Based right here in Oceanside at their Southwest Regional Facility, Canine Companions transformed Trent from an energetic puppy into a highly-skilled professional Facility Dog.
During his 6-9 month training program, Trent mastered over 40 specialized skills designed to help him excel in high-activity environments and provide comfort to those in need. His extensive training, valued at approximately $50,000, was provided at no cost to the Oceanside Police Department, thanks to the generous donors who support Canine Companions.
Want to Meet Trent?
